The ancient monastery at Lamayuru, perched
dangerously upon a precipice is the starting point of this
trekking. This 11 days trail offers close encounters with
the life in the Zanskar region passing through interesting
villages with their little gompas. The route also takes
you through 8 high passes between 3800 m and 5200 m and
sometimes depending on the time an dweather as many as 20
river crossing! Of the various maonstries along the route,
the linshet Gompa with its colourful festival in July is
the perhaps the most important. An old castle at Chilla,
encounters with Yaks between Hanupatta and Photoksar, an
exciting rope bridge across Zanskar River between Pidum
and Pishu and the lush pastures of Snertse are some of the
highlights of this trek.
Padum
with its mixed population of about 1000 muslims and Budhists
( often
with both religions being practiced in one family ) gives
an indication of the socio-religious model of this area.
AS you drive across Zanskar at the end of the trek, the
Ringdum Gompa with its spectacular Mani walls and the breathtaking
views of the Nun (7135 m ) and Kun ( 7085 m) peaks alongwith
the awesome Penzi la glacier provide an unforgettable climax
to this trip.
